The top British medical schools are located at universities with established reputations in various fields of science. "The Guardian" published its "University Guide" for 2009, ranking the top medical schools in the United Kingdom. Two of the top three schools were institutions with storied traditions and reputations for being not only top medical schools, but also among the best universities in the world.

University of Dundee

According to "The Guardian," the top-rated medical school in the U.K. in 2009 was the University of Dundee's school of medicine. Rankings were based on various factors such as job placement, student satisfaction and rankings of faculty members. The medical school is divided among three primary academic divisions: Division of Medical Sciences, Biomedical Research Institute and the Division of Clinical and Population Sciences and Education. Research at Dundee is divided up among these major academic divisions. Particular areas of emphasis within the program include cancer research, population sciences, cardiovascular and lung disease, pharmacogenomics and molecular toxicology, neuroscience, diabetes and metabolic disease and molecular dermatology.

University of Cambridge

The second highest rated medical school in the U.K. in 2009 was the University of Cambridge. Known for its programs in various fields of science, Cambridge is considered to be one of the top research institutions in the world. Cambridge offers the bachelor of medicine (M.B.) and the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. Research at the University of Cambridge spans across a variety of fields of medical science: women's health; cancer research; neurosciences and mental health; cardiovascular medicine; endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism; infection and immunity; stem cells and regenerative medicine; haematological and transplantation medicine; epidemiology and public health; and genetics/genetic medicine.
