There are many reasons for choosing distance learning over a traditional university education. One main factor is cost. The course fees are often the same as for normal degrees, but you don't have to move to a different city to study. Living in London is expensive. You can save thousands of pounds while studying at the University of London by going the distance learning route. Time is another factor. Distance learning allows students to schedule studies around other commitments, including work and child care, making a university education accessible to more people.

The Open University

Established in 1969, The Open University is the United Kingdom's first and only university dedicated to distance learning. More than 150,000 undergraduates and 30,000 postgraduates study subjects ranging from law to art history. The majority of students study part-time while holding down a job. The OU is popular with students with disabilities, who may find it a challenge to attend regular classes. Instead, they study using a combination of online lectures and discussion and the materials sent out by the university.
