Distance learning translation courses are offered on a full or part-time basis through several international learning centres. The courses run between two to three years. Applicants must demonstrate their fluency in the language that they wish to translate into. Although the languages that are offered for translation courses vary, most programs offer courses for translation from English to Arabic, Chinese, French and German.

University of Portsmouth

Based in the United Kingdom, the University of Portsmouth offers part-time distance learning translation courses in a wide array of languages including Arabic, French, Greek Italian, and Russian. Students who are interested in the fast-track program can finish their training within two years. The courses are designed to prepare students to translate between English and a language of their choice. Students receive core theoretical training along with opportunities for practice and research. Candidates who successfully complete the program will receive a Master of Arts degree. Prospective applicants should hold a four-year degree from an accredited institution. Professional translators are eligible to apply into the program. Applicants who are non-native English speakers must submit their TOEFL scores along with their application.

Words Language Services

Words Language Services is located in Dublin Ireland, and offers internationally recognised certificate and diploma courses in translation. The translation language options are open to students who wish to translate from English to French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. The training is offered as a three or five-year program, and courses are open to professional translators or first timers. Prospective applicants must demonstrate their linguistic skills by providing university credits, through residence or work experience in a source language.

City University of London

The Institute of Linguists Educational Trust at the City University of London offers a diploma program in translation. The course is open to practicing translators or career changers. The institute offers a wide array of language combinations for translation such as English to Spanish, Russian to English, English to Slovak, and French to English. The language combinations are offered based on class size and availability of tutors. Prospective applicants must be native speakers of the language that they wish to translate into. Although applicants are not required to provide a formal qualification, they must demonstrate an extensive linguistic background, and must pass qualifying exams. The courses are offered in modules consisting of six assignments, and two 30-minute telephone or e-mail tutorials.
