Paramedics in the U.K. are the senior health care professionals in the National Health Service ambulance service. They are often the first medical professionals to arrive at an accident or emergency and are qualified to assess a patient and administer treatment at the scene. In the past, ambulance service staff could train on the job and work their way up to paramedic, according to NHS Careers. Now, anyone wishing to become a paramedic must take a student paramedic course with an ambulance service trust, or a course in paramedic science at a university.
