A topiary is a sculpted shrub or tree, classically used in home and landscaping design. Live topiaries require maintenance to preserve their shape as the branches and leaves of the tree or shrub grow. These growing leaves and branches must continually be cut back or pruned to maintain the shape of the topiary design. According to Home Decorators, because maintaining a live topiary is time-consuming, many homeowners are opting for artificial, care free topiaries instead. Artificial topiaries are made of life-like plastic which is safe for both indoor and outdoor use.

Potted Topiary

Potted artificial topiaries are a common choice among buyers because of their compact design and versatility. Potted topiaries are available in all shapes and sizes allowing them to be displayed anywhere on the property, they can even be displayed indoors. Some of the smallest potted artificial topiaries are small orbs 5 inches in diameter, which simply sit atop or in a small, decorative vase or pot. Larger artificial potted topiaries can be up to 10 feet tall, commonly sculpted into a tall spiralling tree, suitable for display in the largest of landscaping designs. Potted artificial topiaries are available from speciality websites and some home improvement or gardening stores.

Hedge Topiary

Hedge topiaries are typically sculpted into the classic rectangular shaped topiary hedge design. Artificial hedge topiaries are made solely for outdoor usage, intended to line garden, properties and houses. The artificial hedge topiary is usually sold in sections ranging from 3 to 6 feet in length to allow for a customised length of hedging. Artificial hedge topiaries are rarely sold in local stores as they are considered a speciality item and are often custom-ordered to suit specific height and length requirements. Hedge topiaries are available for order from specialised websites.

Sculptural Topiary

Artificial sculptural topiaries are a common choice amongst homeowners with a large amount of land to decorate. Available in a multitude of designs and sizes, artificial sculptural topiaries make wonderful centrepieces landscaping accents. A sculptural artificial topiary is intended for outdoor usage as most designs are at least 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide for a realistic appearance. Speciality websites offer a selection of designs such as elephants, squirrels, dogs, geometric shapes and inanimate objects. Some speciality websites and manufacturers allow you to request a custom design for an extra fee. Once you have chosen the design, you must choose a size as well. Common sizes are 5 feet by 3 feet, 7 feet by 5 feet, and 10 feet by 7 feet. Artificial sculptural topiaries are available from speciality websites and occasionally garden stores as well.
