Room service attendants are responsible for providing assistance to guests in various hotel accommodations. They service guest rooms and public areas in the hotel according to the hotel procedures. In essence, they are responsible for ensuring that the lodging accommodation is presentable for the guests. As stated on HCareers, the average salary is around £7 per hour.


Room service attendants must be able to welcome the visitors in a kind and respectable manner. For that reason, they must have an inviting and positive personality. Moreover, the quality of the hotel depends upon its reputation. Therefore, they must communicate with guests and team members well and provide a positive environment for the guests. Because room service attendants clean guest rooms and other areas of the hotel, they must be able to have keen attention to detail.


Room service attendants are responsible for thoroughly cleaning the guest rooms. They must change the bed linens, wipe off appliances, vacuum and clean the bathroom. The bed sheets and comforters should be replaced with new ones, and the bathroom items should be replaced with new ones. Likewise, room service attendants clean the public areas in the hotel.

Guest Safety

Room service attendants are responsible for verifying whether the guest rooms are being occupied by guests. Once the attendants determine that the rooms have been vacated, they must report this information to their managers and supervisors. Additionally, they are responsible for performing visual inspections of each guest room prior to cleaning the room, because room service attendants must ensure the safety of hotel guests.

Work Environment

In hotels and other lodging accommodations, the work can be very stressful, chaotic and tiresome. Room service attendants are constantly working on their feet and travelling from room to room. Also, at larger hotels, room service attendants respond to the guest requests, such as food delivery and room commodities. Similarly, room service attendants must maintain a pleasant and positive disposition while interacting with guests and coworkers.

Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2008 lodging accommodations comprised about 1.9 million jobs in cities and resort regions. However, that number is expected to increase by 2018. Also, the bureau states that most of the hotel and lodging accommodation jobs are in the larger hotels. There is no requirement for postsecondary education, because room service attendants generally acquire their training on the job.
