Baskets not only make great decorative items, they are good for use as storage throughout your home. However, depending on the materials used in the baskets, they can tend to snag or scratch items that are placed in them. Make a liner for the bottom and sides of your baskets and you can prevent this damage. Not only will liners protect the basket's contents, they can be coordinated with your existing home decor.

  • Make a liner for the bottom and sides of your baskets and you can prevent this damage.

Wrap a length of paper all around the circumference of the basket. Cut where the edges meet. This will form the pattern for the lining around the interior sides of the basket. Trim the top of the paper to about 5 cm (2 inches) more than the height of the basket. Place the pattern piece on the fabric and cut it out.

Place the base of the basket on top of the craft paper. Trace around the edges of the basket to create a pattern. Add another 6 mm (1/4 inch) around the edges to allow for a seam. Cut out this paper pattern and place it on the fabric. Cut out the pattern on the fabric.

  • Cut out this paper pattern and place it on the fabric.

Sew the main section of the liner, right sides together, end to end, with your sewing machine. Use a 6 mm (1/4 inch) seam allowance.

Pin the bottom fabric piece onto the main section you have just finished. Gather or bunch the edges together as you are pinning. You should now have what looks like a fabric basket or pail.

Sew the bottom fabric section to the main section using your sewing machine. Remove the pins.

Fold over the top edge of the fabric about 6 mm (1/4 inch) and hem with your sewing machine.

Put the basket liner in place in the bottom of the basket. Smooth out the bottom and sides until it fits snugly. Fold over the top edge if you have enough fabric.
