Small and medium-sized businesses based in Scotland or planning to set up in Scotland are eligible for a Scottish Enterprise Smart: Scotland Grant. The business must have fewer than 250 employees and meet other specific financial criteria relating to turnover and annual accounts. Factors taken into account when determining suitability of a business for a grant include the potential for global market opportunities, intellectual property and environmental issues.

The Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development

Small businesses in Scotland may apply for funding from the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, which is the European Union's 50.5 billion euros research and development program. Grants are available for a variety of projects across all industries. As Scotland has one per cent of the European Union population, Scottish businesses could expect to access 100 million euros per year from the total annual budget of around 10 billion euros. Small businesses could qualify for a reimbursement of up to 75 per cent of their research and development costs under the scheme.
