School rankings derive from survey results, in which engineering program deans and senior faculty rate their peer institutions.
A number of private institutions have top biomedical engineering programs. According to U.S. News & World Report, John Hopkins is the best biomedical engineering school for both graduate and undergraduate students. The University of Pennsylvania is an Ivy League school with a program that many people consider a pioneer. Boston University gives undergraduates opportunities to conduct out-of-classroom research and has study-abroad programs tailored to engineering. Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering has a centre supporting initiatives designed to motivate interdisciplinary activities and the creative interactions that result in new biomedical engineering technology. The program is a joint department between the Georgia Institute of Technology engineering department and the Emory School of Medicine. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has a world-renowned engineering department with faculty that directs cutting-edge research in the biomedical engineering field.
Among the world’s best engineering programs, the University of Toronto and ETH Zurich have biomedical engineering programs. The University of Toronto boasts the first undergraduate program available in Canada. The program focuses on new engineering technology and its application in the medical field. ETH Zurich offers a graduate program in biomedical engineering. Students can specialise in bioimaging, biomechanics, bioinstrumentation and molecular bioengineering.
