Design Ideas for a Small Loft

Loft living lures those who dare to be different, enjoy open spaces and appreciate urban environments. Commonly depicted in movies as warehouse-sized apartments, most lofts are found in metropolitan areas where space cost is at a premium. Often less than 1,000 square feet, these small lofts have open floor plans, high ceilings and exposed duct work. With few walls to restrict layouts, a small loft can yield big design.

Minimalism

Live bare bones with this ultra-modern style. Minimalism reduces lifestyle to the essentials. Choose furniture with clean lines, and be sure each piece performs more than one function, such as an ottoman that serves as seating. With minimalism, open space is the ultimate accessory. Exploit architectural gems such as exposed duct work, bricked walls and cement floors.

Modern

Often confused with contemporary, modern design covers everything from 1930s art deco to 1960s mid-century modern. Use this style to soften an industrial-looking loft. Show off various wood finishes in furniture. Classic designs, such as Eames-inspired furnishings, show like museum pieces in a small loft. Make the space cozier with textiles like chenille throws or suede pillows.

Hollywood Regency

Unleash your insatiable appetite for luxury with Hollywood regency style. Hollywood regency puts the glam in glamour. Show off a high ceiling with long, lavish purple velvet drapes. Dress a naked concrete floor with a lush shaggy white rug. Bring in the "bling", with crystal chandeliers, mirrored tables and bejeweled lamps.

Asian

Create an urban oasis with elements of Asian-inspired design. Mount bamboo curtains on tall walls to accentuate the linear qualities in the loft. Choose warm woods, Oriental furniture and neutral colors to create a zen theme. Add a water element, like a fountain or small aquarium. If allowed, hang a wind chime near a window or place a miniature gong on a table near the entrance.

Contemporary

Make a bold statement in a small loft with futuristic furniture. Clear acrylic chairs and glass tables give a small loft an expansive feel. Try an all-white color scheme, then add a dash of color, such as a sky blue throw or lime green rug for a bit of whimsy. Incorporate your high-tech toys, such as a flat screen television or a laptop station, into your design. Use the kitchen area to show off stainless steel appliances and surfaces.

Pop Culture

Use a small loft as a stage to showcase your personality. This style requires that you go big; the more outrageous the better. Think college dorm room meets Andy Warhol Museum. Whether you are into Coca-Cola memorabilia, Star Wars or independent films, display your passion with gusto. Take advantage of the loft's height by hanging art from floor to ceiling. Select your prized possession--perhaps that 1970s Star Wars lunch box--and use it as the basis for your color scheme.
