French Exterior Home Decorating Ideas

French decorating often reflects a simple, yet elegant approach to design. French designs can be romantic and formal or, in the case of French country decor, relaxed and casual. Many typical outdoor French pieces are made of wrought iron, making them durable for exterior home decorating.

French Country Style

One popular French design style is French country. This style originated in the Provence region of southeastern France. Country style items should not match too well, but they should have complementing earthy, rich and saturated colors. Hues should be inspired by wood, stone or another organic material. Yellows and reds are key colors, but they should be as warm as possible, reflecting the colors of leaves in the fall. Greens and blues are more muted. Some items on a home's exterior that can follow French country design guidelines are house color and trim, planting pots, lighting fixtures, gates and patio and porch accessories. Pots can have a crackled glaze in one of the country colors. Light fixtures and gates can feature simple wrought iron designs, and any other outdoor accessories should have a relaxed and casual feel.

French Doors

French doors are a staple of French design. Installing the double-doors in an exterior location will let people know of your fondness for the French look. French doors often have a glazed or stained glass component, but they can be more private if desired. The outside of the doors can even feature a wrought iron gate look that gives it a distinctly French feel. French doors can be used as front doors to a house, although they are more commonly used as patio doors that lead from a living room to the patio. For a rustic French look, use iron hinges and latches on the doors' exterior over bare wood or antiqued paint.

French Cafe Table and Chairs

Furniture for a patio or garden can give any home exterior the look of an outdoor French cafe. Wrought iron chairs or benches and a table are classic, lightweight and simple. The design should have clean lines and should not be elaborate. French-style outdoor furniture typically comes in limited colors, like black, white or gray. These colors are appropriate, and the furniture is easy to paint or antique at home. A round table gives the set a clean look. Finish off your French garden cafe with a simple cotton table cloth in an organic color and fresh flowers in a simple vase.
