During the 1960s, a youth movement arose in the United States called the hippie subculture. The hippie movement embraced anything that freed humans from societal restrictions. Icons associated with the hippie movement include peace signs and tie-dyed colours. Hippie decorating styles for a home or for a party could include these and other hippie items such as psychedelic art, beads, and scarves.

Embrace Nature

During the hippie movement, people embraced their connection with the earth. When using a hippie decorating style in your home, you can follow this concept. If your home overlooks woods, a meadow, water, or another feature of nature, make this the focal point of your room. Arrange your furniture so you have the best view of nature. You could also fill your room with potted plants and flowers. Climbing plants are especially great because they grow to surround your furniture.

Bright Colors

Give your room a real hippie feel by using bright colours such as yellow, orange, and lime in your decorating. Hang beaded curtains from your windows and doorways, and scatter paisley prints around the room. Browse through vintage shops and find psychedelic art to add to your walls, or simply hang up big smiley faces. Accent your room with rainbow colours and tie-dye.

Keep a casual hippie feel in mind when you plan the furniture in your hippie decorating. You could throw some brightly coloured beanbag chairs around the room for furniture. Add ambience by placing lava lamps around the room. Don't forget to add some incense burners to make the room smell good and add a true hippie feel.

Icons of the Hippie Era

Whether you're planning a party or decorating a room for living, you can always accent the room with icons from the hippie era. Hang up some wall words that say "Flower Power" and surround the words with flower decals. Decorate with peace signs and old psychedelic rock posters. You could drape beads around furniture and pin up scarves around the corners of the room.

Decorate With Music

Music was a big part of the hippie era. Hunt through thrift shops and yard sales to collect different types of flutes and guitars. You might want to paint some of the guitars in bright colours or put old psychedelic rock band stickers and flower decals on them. Hang a batik tapestry on your wall and surround it with the instruments. You can use wall clamps to latch the instruments onto your walls.
