Pool parties are often laid back and relaxed, but a good cake is always appreciated. While cake and water do not mix, that doesn't mean cakes can't successfully carry off a pool party theme. Depending on the birthday person's age, personality, and interests, a commemorative pre-enactment cake, a joking pun cake, or a fantasy water park cake may be appropriate.

Pre-Enactment Cake

If a party's guest list is confirmed well in advance, a cake decorator might consider a pre-enactment cake. Like a photo of the event before it happens, a pre-enactment pool birthday party cake depicts the pool where the party is taking place, along with all the guests attending and having fun. It is an edible photograph in miniature and will appeal to the birthday person and guests alike. Depending on the available time and skill level of the cake decorator, cake decorations can be edible or can be miniature dolls and toys used for decoration. If inedible parts are used, the decorator should make sure to warn partygoers about what can and cannot be eaten.

Pun Cake

As with any good birthday cake, the theme is often determined by the birthday person's personality. If the birthday person has a certain type of humour, a play on the pool party theme might be appreciated. Decorators might consider floating billiard balls in a pool designed to look like the pool where the party's being held. The billiard balls might also be wearing swimsuits. The billiard balls can be made fairly simply from chocolate using round candymaking moulds. Special candy decorating dusts, as well as chocolate and moulds, are available from hobby and craft stores that have candymaking sections. Shops that carry baking supplies will likely have these items in stock, as well. Since water and chocolate do not mix, a layer of light blue frosting or creative placement of blue fruit-flavoured gelatin can serve as water.

Water Park Cake

An elaborate extrapolation of a pool party, a water park cake is designed to look like a fantastic water amusement park on top of a cake. Due to its complex nature, the home cake decorator should consider finding toy water park pieces to build a water park on top of a sheet cake. A cake of this nature featuring people on it should probably include a representation of the birthday person. People and some decorations can be moulded out of marzipan dough (almond paste-based edible dough) or fondant (sugar and/or marshmallow-based edible dough), or small dolls can be purchased and dressed to look like the birthday person and any other people at the party. As with the pre-enactment cake, partygoers should be warned about any inedible decorations.
