Though the game of Monopoly involves plenty of chance, you can increase your probability of winning by following certain strategy guidelines. Instead of playing carelessly and hoping for the best, use your money wisely and focus your efforts on particular goals. Play diplomatically and enjoy the game.

Buying Properties

Try to buy as many properties as you can early in the game. Hasbro, the official producer of the Monopoly game, recommends in its strategy guide that players always buy a property: if no other properties in that colour group have been purchased, if it gives the player a second or third property in a particular colour group, if it prevents another player from completing a colour group or if it is an orange property. Statistics show that the orange colour group produces the most profits. You should always buy railroads, because these also generate a lot of profit, particularly if you own all four. Even if an opponent has already bought a railroad and you won't be able to get all four, buy one if you land on it to prevent that opponent from purchasing them all.

Statistics show that players can use their money most efficiently by building three houses on a property, rather than four houses or a hotel. Statistics also show that certain colour groups produce the most profit early in the game because they require less money for building but still get landed on frequently. Particularly profitable colour groups include the orange group, with the St. James, Tennessee and New York properties, and the light blue colour group, with the Oriental, Vermont and Connecticut properties.

Do not pay to leave jail or use a get out of jail free card if your opponents have monopolies with houses and hotels built on them. Staying in jail might save you money. However, you should try to leave jail early in the game so you don't miss out on buying properties.

Treat your fellow players well, even if you're tempted to gloat when they land on your houses or hotels, or tempted to whine when you land on theirs. Polite, gracious play will encourage your fellow players to cooperate with you if you want to make a trade.
