Many men are not aware that there are certain types of swimming costumes for different water activities. Men are sometimes either so self-conscious about wearing swimwear that they stick only to trunks, or they carelessly wear items--such as shorts--that are not designed for water sports. Men should select swimming attire based on its function, not just style.

The boxer swimsuit is made like boxer underwear. The length hits about mid-thigh and the suit has an inner mesh brief for support. Boxer-style swimming costumes provide coverage for thighs, buttocks and the private area, making the suits appropriate for all body types. Most boxer-style swimsuits feature a drawstring for a custom fit around the waist. Excessive tightness in the waist area can make the stomach rounder and flabby-looking. A loosefitting pair looks better, and is more comfortable. Generally, boxers are good for swimming.

Square-cut Shorts

Square-cut shorts provide stronger support for the upper thighs and hips and also enhance the buttocks area. Square-cut shorts fit close to the body, and are similar to cycling shorts. Usually made with Lycra instead of polyester and mesh, square-cut shorts are designed for tougher swimming activities and are recommended for triathlons. Men active in water sports do well in this style.

Board Shorts

Board shorts are genuine surfing gear. These shorts are long (usually hitting the knees or below) with a baggy, comfortable fit. Board shorts feature a drawstring waist and sometimes have pockets. Because this kind of swimwear provides maximum coverage, board shorts suit men who do not want to show a lot of leg. Men who have a slim build---particularly those with a flat stomach---look best in board shorts, as they draw attention to the abdomen area.

Though it exposes a lot more skin than other types of men's swimwear, the bikini provides a good amount of support. The bikini has a high-cut brief design that is quite distinct from regular swim trunks. The stretchy garment offers extra support in the crotch and buttocks areas. Typically, athletes such as Olympic-calibre swimmers and divers wear bikinis because they provide extreme flexibility for the lower body. The bikini mostly suits men who are in good shape, since it shows off most of the body.
