Design a costume that reflects the kind of pirate girl you want to be. Figure out what accessories (purses, shoes, etc.) and clothing items (dresses, skirts, etc.) you want to use for your costume before borrowing or purchasing costume materials. "Shop" for ideas at Halloween stores, thrift stores or websites and compare prices from all the places you've shopped.

Traditional Pirate Girl Costume

Tie a pink bandanna or a scarf over your head. Style your hair so it looks "scraggly" or "dirty" from being out on sea. For a makeshift eye patch, use black construction paper (cardboard or whatever sturdy material you have) and a black shoe string to secure the eye patch. Draw a flower design or a Jolly Roger on the eye patch for additional effect. Use a white, pink or patterned button-up dress shirt for the main shirt. Roll up the sleeves to your elbows and accompany the shirt with a black vest. Roll up the bottoms of black trousers and wear flip flops or sandals. You can also use a skirt instead of trousers.

Pirate Punk Girl

Utilise all or some of the same costume techniques from the traditional pirate costume. Dye your hair pink, green or any desired colour. Wear black lipstick and eye shadow for additional effect. Strap a guitar, harmonica or other instrument to your costume that is easy for you to carry (for parties, trick-or-treating, etc.). Tuck some sheet music of "old pirate songs" in a large purse or handbag. Wear leather boots and decorate with glitter or glitter pens if desired. A "new age" pirate girl can also have headphones and a portable music device as additional accessories.

Pirate Princess

Use a black and white, solid black or solid white dress to allude to the Jolly Roger symbol. Tear the dress in certain places to create a tattered effect, but only do this on a dress that you wish to tear. Purchase or fashion a princess hat to go with the costume. Accent your face with glitter and any desired make-up. Create a princess wand that doubles as a pirate sword.

Free-Spirit Pirate Girl

Use a tie-dye shirt and bell-bottomed trousers as main attire for the costume. If you have long hair, braid it in one or various places and decorate with beads. You can also use a wig (dreadlocks, curly or fro wigs are some examples). Fashion a bandanna around your forehead and accompany it with sunglasses of your choice. Draw flower designs on your face or arms with washable or temporary ink. On the back of your shirt, write (or wherever you wish to write it) "peace, love and the seven seas." Decorate your wrists and ankles with bracelets and your fingers with rings. Wear colourful jewelled or pearl necklaces for additional effect.
