Modern furnishings are enjoying an upswing in popularity. This rise is due in part to the younger population's shift to urban loft living, apartments and other smaller spaces. Modern furniture is more compact than traditional furniture and much less ornate. Also, international influences and a sleek, eclectic, functional furniture style has entered into American living spaces.

Urban Style

For the modern urban-style living room look, try dark brown or shiny black wood finishes. Think metals, glass and ceramics as accent pieces. Decorate with leather sofas and sectionals and tables made of wood and metal. If your living room space is especially small, consider having no sofa at all. Place arm chairs, club chairs, lounge chairs and love seats in different sizes and numbers around a focal point like a fireplace, TV or a leather ottoman serving double duty as a coffee table. Use plenty of pillows in different textures and colours. Display pop art on the walls. Pick up living room pieces made in Belgium, Italy and Scandinavia.

Modern Mid-Century Vintage

Modern retro furniture takes on many names. It is that period of modern furniture somewhere between the 1950s and 1960s. Some interior decorators and furniture manufacturers include the 1940s as well. Whether you call it vintage mid-century, retro antiques or modern retro, keep an eye out for European and American pottery from this period. Danish modern living room furniture was quite popular then. Look for walnut wood on sofas, chairs and tables trimmed in walnut, chrome and glass. Choose clean, straight lines. No swirls or baroque carvings. Paint walls pastels or neutral colours.

Feng Shui

Feng Shui is perfect for arranging modern living room furniture to achieve harmony through colour, light, touch and movement. Utilise the five Feng Shui elements: fire, earth, metal, water and wood. Represent wood through the colour green, a popular colour in modern furnishings. For fire, use candles, fireplaces and lamps.

Brown, yellow and beige are also fashionable in modern living room furniture. Clay pots and statues, stone tiles and natural stone counter tops can serve as earth elements. Gold silver, white and grey are among modern living room colours and represent metal. Use a fountain and black and blue colours to represent water. Make sure everything is placed correctly to create balance and harmony.

Modern Minimalist

For an uncluttered look, modern minimalist embodies all the attributes of modern living room furniture, but less of it. The minimalist movement cuts to the bare bones accessories, colours and furniture. Add few paintings to the walls. Try frameless or frames with only straight lines. Go for all white, all black, all grey or metallic colours. Pillows and sofas should be all one colour and plain. The addition of lacquered woods, a glass vase with one bright flower or a plain dish with fruit or candy will soften the sterile look and add interest. The goal is to have the room spotless, uncluttered and looking perfect.
