Albert Einstein College of Medicine -- Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), gives talented undergraduates with a background in the sciences to conduct biomedical research. Participants spend nine weeks in a laboratory and present their research at the end of the summer. The 50 students selected for the program also attend weekly seminars and workshops in career planning and ethics. Students receive a £1,950 stipend, free housing on the Einstein campus and transportation assistance (up to £325 for U.S. students living outside the New York City area). The program is open to students completing their junior year.

Mayo Graduate School -- Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship

Participants in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at the Mayo Clinic can conduct original research or work on ongoing projects. They attend weekly seminars to learn about emerging research areas and are mentored by Mayo Clinic faculty and medical students. College undergraduates in their sophomore or junior years are eligible for the program, which selects 90 to 100 students annually. Fellows receive a £3,250 stipend, and summer housing is available.

Baylor College of Medicine -- Summer Medical and Research Training Program

The Summer Medical and Research Program (SMART) at Baylor College of Medicine is designed for undergraduate students who want to explore careers in medicine and medical research. Participants take part in nine paid weeks of biomedical research and attend daily seminars and career-development workshops. The program website notes that the position is "a real job," and attendees are paid £2,600 for the nine weeks. Students interested in applying to M.D. programs have the opportunity to shadow physicians at Texas Medical Center hospitals.
