The wristwatch can be anything from a simple fashion statement to a complex chronograph watch that measures exact intervals of time. When soldiers in World War I needed a timepiece that would free their hands while carrying materials, the wristwatch became popular. Today quartz (battery-operated) watches are popular, along with traditional mechanical self-winding watches. Customers can now buy affordable watches with top-designer names or prestigious luxury brands that cost thousands of dollars.

The Citizen Watch Company is the world's largest watchmaker. With headquarters in Tokyo, Citizen began in Japan in 1918. It chose the name Citizen to reflect its commitment to its motto: "Close to the Hearts of People Everywhere." Citizen has become a luxury brand, focusing on extreme precision. The company's Eco-Drive watches are the first watches powered by light. The Skyhawk A-T series is a radio-controlled atomic watch.

TAG Heurer

TAG Heuer is a Swiss luxury brand whose watches include chronographs. The company has built its reputation on innovative technology, elegant designs and watches for athletes. The brand focuses on timepieces for car racers, golfers and divers. Its lines include the Monaco, Grand Carrera and Aqauracer. The company's newest line is the Professional Golf Watch, the first one designed specifically for golfers. TAG Heurer's watches can cost up to £8,125.


Fossil makes American quartz watches that are popular for their fashionable styles and affordable prices. The company's designs are known for their rugged style. Fossil started in 1984 when it introduced watches based on retro styles from the 1930s and 1940s. Its Keleido watch changes colours and the Wrist Net enables customers to customise their watches. Fossil also has a line based on popular movies, such as "Batman," "Cars" and "Pirates of the Caribbean." Two of the watchmaker's most innovative designs are a wrist PDA and a caller-ID watch.
