Whether you are attending a "Wizard of Oz"-themed party, regular costume party or a Halloween gathering, choose costumes from the famous 1939 film. While Dorothy, Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion are easy to recreate, there are some equally popular characters that might interest you. Creating homemade costumes of "Wizard of Oz" characters ensures your costume is a standout and you won't be one of a dozen wearing a blue dress with red shoes; ragged clothes stuffed with straw or a fuzzy mane and tail.

Tin Man

Start with grey sweat pants and a sweatshirt. Cut roof flashing for a cylinder that fits around the body, and smaller ones for the arms and legs. These can be taped together and to each other with silver duct tape. Wrap a pair of rain boots or snow boots in silver duct tape as well. Use silver spray paint to fix up some silver gloves and turn a regular plastic funnel silver. Once the silver face paint is applied, the Tin Man costume will really come together.

Represent the Lollipop Guild with green striped socks, green shorts and a plaid shirt. Add some colourful suspenders for an added touch. The key to the Munchkin Man's costume is in the details. Add pointed toe shoe covers for the feet and gel up the hair to a 4- or 5-inch curl that stands straight up. Use a wooden dowel and some posterboard to construct an oversized lollipop as a prop. Girl Munchkins can layer lots of skirts or petticoats for a full effect, add the striped socks and pointy shoes and curl the hair. Add a stiff flower to a pillbox hat or headband to recall the scene where the giggling Munchkin Girls are hiding in the bushes.

Flying Monkeys

Transform a basic brown or black bear, cat or monkey costume into the evil flying monkeys that did the witch's bidding. A black or brown body suit only needs a long tail---make a black felt tube stuffed with batting and attach with a pin. Monkey ears fit onto a black headband or black hoodie, but don't forget the little beanies from the movie. Make that out of an upside down styrofoam cup. The monkey vest can be cut out of blue felt to size, then glue on the red felt patterns. Attach stiff felt monkey wings to the back of the vest.
