Understanding math vocabulary is as important as knowing how to solve problems. Students who don't have a solid command of math terms eventually get lost during math instruction. Simple vocabulary games help students brush up on the important math terms. Math vocabulary games work well as a warm up or during learning centre time.

Math Vocabulary Bingo

Blank Bingo cards allow you to customise a math game to fit current vocabulary words. Write each word in the blank squares on the Bingo cards. Make sure the words are mixed up on each card so everyone doesn't get a Bingo at once. Read off the definitions of the math vocabulary words. The kids match the definition to the vocabulary words on the Bingo cards in an attempt to get a row of words covered.

Concentration

Concentration is a classic card game easily adaptable for math vocabulary practice. Use index cards to create your own math concentration game. The matching pairs of cards will include the vocabulary word on one card and its definition on the other. Create as many of the card pairs as you want in the game. All cards are place upside down on the playing area. The players take turns flipping over two cards at a time. The goal is to match the word with its definition. Matches are kept while cards that don't match are flipped back over.

Partner Match

Create pairs of cards, one with the vocabulary word and one with the definition. Each student receives either a vocabulary word or a definition card. The students mingle and compare cards to find their partner by matching words and definitions. When each person finds her math vocabulary partner, the groups stand in front of the class to share their words and definitions.

Math Vocabulary Relay

A relay race gets the kids moving as they review their math terms. Sets of math terms and their definitions are placed at one end of the room. You can play as one large group or divide the students into smaller groups. Each team will need its own set of cards. One at a time, the students race to the other end, grab a card and return it to the starting line. Once all of the cards are gathered, the team works together to match up the words and their definitions.
