Whether you're searching for a gift for a father's birthday, Father's Day or other special occasion, giving a present that reflects his commitment to his family is a unique idea. Giving a personalised gift is as simple as doing a little bit of research into what he most enjoys, then creating or giving gifts that teach him a little bit about his family or let him stay in touch with them at all times.

Family Tree

With a little bit of research, create a gift of family and history with a family tree. Through online registries, libraries and government records, research your family's history, noting relatives dating back over the decades or centuries, famous family members or even track where family members have lived over the years. Creative gift givers can design and draw their own family trees, using photos of family members or drawing pictures; family trees may also be ordered through vendors who will research your family and present you a detailed and attractive listing.

Photo Book

Many fathers have stacks of photos stuffed into shoe boxes and drawers or collected digitally in computer file folders. Consider taking photos from years of family events and making a photo book. Any hard copy photos you have may be scanned in digitally (paper and copy stores offer this service if you do not have a scanner). A number of online book companies allow you to upload your photos, arrange them on the page, choose colours, backgrounds and layouts; then even add text, captions or paragraphs about the dad. Do a retrospective of the father's children from birth to present time or concentrate on photos from family holiday gatherings.

Prepaid Cell Phone

If the gift recipient is still land-line-locked and hasn't yet got a cell phone, a prepaid cell phone can be a nice way for him to keep in touch with his kids and other family members. Prepaid cell phones are available from a variety of big name vendors (and other companies that solely produce prepaid phones). You can select from a number of phone styles (including ones with extra large buttons and lacking the bells and whizzes he may not ever want to use), plus choose from package plans. Buy a gift of 30 minutes, 100 minutes or a whole year's worth. Because the phone is prepaid, he won't receive any bills or have a long commitment to carry out.
