Pirates and princess are two popular themes for a birthday party, partly because of the popularity of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean and Disney Princesses. Whether you are planning a pirate party or a princess party or wanting to combine the two together, there are plenty of ideas available that are fun and easy to execute.

Pirates

Pirates are a great party idea for boys and girls alike. For invitations you can make your own by making a pirate flag out of cardstock. Or you could buy store bought invitations and include either an inexpensive bandanna or eye patch in the envelope for the guests to wear to the party. For decorations, use nautical themed decorations such as fishing nets and anchors. You can also use a Styrofoam cooler to make your own treasure chest and use it to hold your beverages or fill it with treats for the guest to dig through. For entertainment, you could create a treasure map and have the guests try to find the treasure chest you have hidden somewhere.

Princesses

A princess party can be simple. Invitations can be made out of cardstock or you could bake crown shape cookies and deliver the invitations to the guest with the cookie. You can instruct the guests to come dressed as a princess to make the party more festive. For the decorations, use white Christmas lights to add a tinkling effect to the room. Use pinks and purples, or whatever the birthday girl's favourite colour is, to decorate the room. Use fluffy pillows and ribbon to add a soft touch. If you want to be a little fancier, use nice china for the guests to eat off of. For activities you can make a game of pin the tiara on the princess similar to pin the tail on the donkey. You can also have the guests make their own paper crowns using construction paper and plastic gems you purchased from your local craft store.

Disney Pirates and Princesses

If you want to explore the idea of combining the pirate and princess party together, going with a Disney theme is an easy way to accomplish it. This is an easy idea if you have a birthday boy and girl who want different party themes. Create your own invitations out of cardstock and instruct the guests to come dressed as their favourite princess or pirate. The decorations can be a cross between pirate and princess since you will be melding the two party ideas into one. Look for Disney decorations with the different pirate and princess themes. Have activities for the pirates to dig for gold and the princesses can make their own glass slippers out of construction paper. Let the party coexist as one but have plenty of activities that all the guests will enjoy.
