There are several grants available that can be used for window replacement. Whether it is to make a home or business more energy efficient, part of a community or urban development project or for renovations, grants can cover the costs of buying and installing new windows, which can get expensive. Grant beneficiaries will not have to pay the money back unless they violate the terms of the agreement.

Weatherization Assistance Program

The Department of Energy helps low-income families in making their homes more energy efficient through the Weatherization Assistance Program. According to DOE, 38 million homes are eligible to receive weatherization services which include replacing windows. This money is received by state and local governments who disperse services to these homes free of charge. The American Renovation and Reinvestment act of 2009 gave the Weatherization Program £3 billion in order to weatherize over £0.6 million homes each year. In order for households to qualify the annual income must be below 200 per cent of the poverty line.

Home Repair Loan and Grant Program

Available to very low income families, the Home Repair Loan and Grant Program, which is paid for by the government, assists in providing funds to renovate, modernise and/or repair homes. Homeowners can qualify for a £13,000 loan over 20 years at 1 per cent interest if they cannot acquire any funding from other creditors. However families can qualify for a £4,875 grant to make repairs after removing health and safety problems from around their house. The grant money may have to be repaid if the home is sold within three years.

Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program

Funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), this grant is available to homeowners who help build the house themselves. Up to £9,750 can be awarded for land acquisition as well as infrastructure improvements. Homeowners qualify if they are low income earners and have exhausted other means of getting funding before becoming eligible for this grant.
