While games like “Grand Theft Auto” and “Saints Row” put you at odds with law enforcement, there are games for the Xbox 360 that puts you in the shoes of the men and women who protect cities from crime. These games range from adventure titles revolving around solving crimes to action games where a gun or car is your only partner.
Condemned: Criminal Origins
As part of the police's Special Crimes Unit, your goal in “Condemned: Criminal Origins” is to track a serial killer who seeks to cause mass panic in the streets. Developed by Monolith Productions and released in November of 2005, the game plays as a first person shooter that incorporates crime scene investigating elements. Players use tools such as a gas spectrometer and digital camera to capture evidence while using guns and melee attacks to take out enemies.
Set in the future, “Crackdown” players assume the role of a newly enhanced police officer who uses his special abilities to take out major crime leaders throughout the city. Similar to “Grand Theft Auto” players are able to travel freely around the environment using a variety of weapons and vehicles to complete their objectives. Players can team up with a friend in coop mode in which each player can freely explore the same game space. “Crackdown” was released in February of 2007.
Need for Speed Undercover
In “Need for Speed Undercover,” released on November 18th, 2008 and developed by EA Black Box, you play as a cop who must infiltrate a gang of street racers. The game itself revolves around car races and chases, as your work your way up the racing ladder while taking out other members of the criminal car racing underworld. The twelfth game in the “Need for Speed” series, Undercover is the first game in which you take on the role of a cop.
Sam and Max Season One
Not all police games are about gritty crimes and shoot-outs. In “Sam and Max Season One,” players take on the role of self described “freelance police” as they solve cases involving former child stars, hostage taking television hosts and the destruction of the Internet. An adventure game that relies on humour to drive the story along, “Sam and Max Season One” was released for download on the Xbox 360 on June 17, 2009.
CSI Deadly Intent
Exploring the forensics side of police work, “CSI: Deadly Intent” was developed by Telltale Games and released for the Xbox 360 in October of 2009. The game is set up and as a point and click adventure where you discover evidence, run tests, question suspects and eventually make an arrest. Based on the television show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, the game includes the show's cast whom you work alongside.
Dead Rights: Retribution
The fourth game in the “Dead Rights” series, Retribution was developed by Volatile Games with an April 2010 release. Players take on the role as police officer Jack Slate who along with Shadow the dog take on criminals in a third person shooter. Players can choose to disarm their enemies or use deadly force as either Jack or Shadow.
