Popsicle sticks are a versatile craft supply that can be used to create distinctive art projects for all seasons. Appropriate for a Valentine craft project in the classroom or a fun activity at a kid-friendly Valentine's Day party, Popsicle sticks add a three-dimensional quality to Valentine-themed crafts. The crafts run the gamut from room decorations and gifts to clever Valentines. Available in many sizes, these thin wooden sticks range from 2¾-inch mini sticks to jumbo sticks that measure 6 inches.

Use Popsicle sticks to connect construction paper hearts for an attractive Valentine's day banner. Write one word on each heart to send a special message. Another approach is to attach 8-inch construction paper hearts to jumbo-sized Popsicle sticks to make colourful wall signs. Write messages on the hearts or embellish with glitter, confetti, ribbons or paper doilies.

Add colourful bouquets of Valentine suckers around the room using Popsicle sticks to create Valentine-themed vases. Glue vertical Popsicle sticks around empty tin cans with a hot glue gun. Paint the sticks in shades of pink or red and embellish by gluing on craft foam hearts and tying ribbon around the container. Fill the container with a bouquet of large, heart-shaped Valentine suckers.

Make a candy flower bouquet by decorating a clay pot and filling the pot with green floral foam. Paint five or six Popsicle sticks green and glue a piece of wrapped valentine candy to the stick. Insert the sticks into the floral foam for a whimsical and edible Valentine's Day bouquet.

Use Popsicle sticks to create a simple picture frame with a Valentine theme. Attach a photo to a 4-by-4 inch piece of cardboard with white craft glue. Frame the picture by gluing one Popsicle stick to each side of the photo, overlapping the sticks at the corners. Use a hot glue gun to attach heart-shaped candy to the Popsicle sticks. If you like, you can turn the frame into a refrigerator magnet by attaching magnetic strips to the back of the frame.

Create a Valentine's Day butterfly by cutting a couple of 5-inch hearts out of construction paper. Decorate these hearts by gluing on smaller heart cut-outs and adding glitter or stickers. These hearts will form the wings of the butterfly. Paint a standard Popsicle stick black and add craft eyes and pipe cleaner antennae to form the body of the butterfly. Turn the construction paper hearts on their sides with the points meeting and overlapping an inch. Glue the Popsicle stick on top of the construction paper hearts at the centre. Write your Valentine message on the construction paper.

Create clever Valentine pals out of craft foam and Popsicle sticks. Cut a 3-inch heart out of red craft foam and a 1-inch circle out of pink craft foam. Turn the heart upside down and glue the pink circle to the point of the red heart. Draw a face on the circle and add yarn for hair. Glue mini Popsicle sticks to the heart to forms arms and legs. Be sure to glue the ends of the Popsicle sticks to the underside of the heart. Write a message on the red craft foam heart to complete the Valentine.
