Home Business Ideas for Kids

Some kids have a natural entrepreneurial spirit and, as a parent, you want to encourage this. By starting a business, your child can perfect her skills, learn about business and earn money, too. While a teenager may be able to take care of many things by herself, younger children may need a lot of parental involvement in order to make a business succeed. Even teens may need their parents to sign up for accounts in their name.

Lemonade Stand

The lemonade stand is perhaps the most classic home business idea for kids. On a hot summer day, kids can make lemonade and sell it from the front lawn. This could be from a simple table or a more elaborate stand. In order to boost sales, encourage your child to sell baked goods or other snacks along with the lemonade.

Selling Collectibles

Kids understand the type of things that other kids are interested in. He can use this to his advantage by selling items to others. Start by having him go through his own toys to see what he can sell. Then, sell them at a garage sale or through an Internet site like Craigslist or eBay. If he enjoys it, he can expand the business by visiting local garage sales to buy the latest items at discounted prices and selling them for more than he paid.

Selling Crafts

If your child has a talent for making crafts, it could present a good idea for a home business. Have her make things that appeal to a broad range of people, like jewellery, clothing or hats. She can then sell them at a craft fair, to her friends or online. The website Etsy.com offers a place for artists to sell wares.

Video Gaming

Video games are a popular pastime for young and old alike. Some games take a long time for players to improve their level or find all the items they need to play a game. If your child enjoys playing video games--and is good at "leveling up"--he can be paid to complete game tasks for others, being paid real money for virtual goods.

Website Design

Some children have a knack for working with computers, which can bring in big money. Encourage your child to learn web and graphic design, and start a company building websites for small businesses. This can even lead to full-time work after graduation.
