Since people's likes and dislikes vary greatly, planning a birthday party for a 70th birthday can be stressful. You can choose from a number of party ideas that will fit the sentimental guest of honour as well as the active birthday boy or the birthday girl who does not want a big to-do.

Family Reunion

A 70th birthday is an important milestone since the guest of honour has lived through seven full decades. If you plan ahead, you can arrange a family reunion on the big day. The family that lives close by as well as those who live far away can get together to celebrate the day. Family reunion traditions vary among families. You can plan a one-day event where you go to a park and have a picnic or you can plan a weeklong trip to a distant location. Just be sure to give everyone plenty of time to plan for travel and make arrangements.

Walk Down Memory Lane

For the sentimental guest honour, you can plan a walk down memory lane. Gather pictures from the guest of honor's life from friends and family. The pictures can span the entire 70 years and be displayed on the party venue's walls or if you are craftier, you could create a scrapbook. Another fun idea is to have the party guests mail or e-mail you notes about their favourites memories of the guest of honour and include the notes with the pictures.

Fifties Sock Hop

If your guest of honour enjoys a more active environment, you can plan a sock hop. Let all your guests know to dress in fifties attire such as poodle skirts and saddle shoes. For entertainment, have fifties era music playing and allow the guests to dance the night away. Choose foods that the birthday boy enjoys. It can be as simple as chips and dip and soda or you can have a full comfort meal including meat loaf, mashed potatoes and corn.

Card Party

Sometimes the birthday girl may not want to have a party, but you may want to ensure that the big day is recognised. A simple idea is a card party. Send invitations to family and friends letting them know that the birthday is approaching but the birthday girl has asked for no party. Ask them to send a birthday card to your address prior to that date sending birthday wishes. Then, on her actual birthday, take all the cards to her and allow her to open them and read all the sentiments her friends and family wanted to share.
