Essential oils to induce labor
A sweet smelling birth: aromatherapy to induce labour (pregnant #8 image by Adam Borkowski from

A woman whose pregnancy threatens to extend into a 10th month, may want to consult her midwife or holistic obstetrician about natural ways to induce labour. Aromatherapy oils can be massaged into a pregnant women's abdomen suspended in a carrier oil (peanut oil is not recommended for pregnancy massage). Alternately, a woman wishing to bring on labour can inhale small amounts of one of these oils. All methods of labour induction should only be undertaken with the aid of a qualified health care worker.

Clary Sage

Clary sage is known as an especially helpful oil for women. It naturally supports oestrogen production, and thus helps with menstrual difficulties and menopause health concerns, as well as aiding in inducing labour. Also, clary sage works on the hypothalmus, relieving anxiety, thus easing the birth process.

Lavender is one of the gentlest oils to use on the skin. It has emmenagogue properties and thus should not be used by pregnant women unless trying to induce labour. Its calming and pain-relief properties can help create a more relaxing labour situation for the mother.

Some people are sensitive to jasmine, so the mother's potential allergic reaction to this oil should be established before use. Jasmine has emmenagogue properties and should be avoided by pregnant women not seeking to hasten labour. It has mood-elevating as well as calming qualities. It has a strong effect on the uterus, which can ease childbirth but should be used sparingly.

Palma Rosa

This essential oil with the roselike scent oil is believed to boost the levels of oxytocin (the "love" hormone) in the blood, as well as having calming properties.
