Seussical Costume Ideas
Cat in the Hat (cat in a hat image by Shaun Meintjes from

No writer of children's literature has given us so many fun and recognisable characters as Dr. Seuss. You see the tall red and white top hat and you think of the Cat in the Hat. You see the green face and homemade Santa suit and you know it's the Grinch. With a little felt and a sweat suit you can make your own Dr. Seuss character costume in no time at all.

Cat And The Hat

Start with a black hooded sweat suit. Cut the cat's white tummy out of felt and sew or glue it to the front of the sweat shirt. Sew felt cat ears onto the hood. Tie a big red bow around the neck and wear over size white gloves. Draw a pink nose and black whiskers on face and top with his famous red and white hat. You can buy these at a costume shop or online or you can make one out of felt.

Thing One And Thing Two

Cut out a white felt circle and label it "Thing one" or "Thing two." Glue to the front of a red sweat suit or one piece pair of red pyjamas. Use temporary spray on blue hair dye or wear a blue wig. Wear red gloves or mittens and red socks.

The Grinch

Wear green sweatpants and a red sweat shirt. Sew or glue white fur to cuffs, hem and neck. Sew jagged edge trim to a pair of green socks and wear a Santa hat. You can buy a mask or you can wear a green ski mask and green make up on you face.

Sam I Am

Wear a long yellow top with a jagged hemline and a large red felt top hat. Glue your green eggs and ham to a plate and carry a sign that says "Sam I Am."

Sally and Brother

Sally should wear a black jumper over a white puffed sleeved blouse. Draw pleats on the skirt and a collar on the blouse with chalk or a marker. Add a red bow to hair. Brother can wear black trousers and a white high neck pullover. Draw wrinkles with chalk.
