What Causes a Flickering Eye?

A flickering eyelid is a very annoying phenomenon that pops up out of nowhere, can stick around for a couple of weeks and then suddenly disappear. Many people who are suddenly afflicted with this temporary malady wonder whether it will ever go away, and more importantly, what caused it to start in the first place. The medical term for the condition is ocular myokymia, and fatigue often is the cause.

Lack of sleep

If you're not getting enough sleep at night, you may suddenly find that one of your eyelids is flickering uncontrollably. Getting proper rest, according to ophthalmologists, is one way to make the spasms stop.


If you're overdoing it with products containing caffeine such as coffee, tea and soda, you might suffer from a flickering eyelid. Cut back on the caffeine will help relieve the problem.


A lot of stress could cause a flickering eyelid. Once you're able to overcome the issues causing stress in your life, the flickering might end.
