How to Choose the Best Dog Grooming Brush

Updated April 17, 2017

No single type of brush is best for all dogs. The type of brush you should use on your dog is dependent on your dog's coat type. Brushing your dog will keep his or her coat healthy and will reduce shedding. When brushing your dog, always brush the dog gently with patience. Even with the correct brush, removing all of the loose hair may take a long time.

Know your dog's hair type. If you are not sure what type of hair coat your dog has, you can ask your veterinarian or a professional dog groomer.

Choose a bristle brush that has small bristles for dogs with short hair and smooth coats. The bristles on the brush should be close together.

Pick a brush with firm bristles for dogs that are short-haired and have coarse coats.

Select a soft bristle brush or a brush with wire pin bristles for dogs with long and medium length fur. The bristles should be spaced far apart.

Use a brush with capped wire pins for dogs with delicate and fine coats. A wide-spaced wire pin brush should also be used for dogs with thick outer coat and smooth undercoats.
