Many people love detective shows, from old classics like "Columbo" to newer shows like "CSI." Solving crimes from the comfort of your own couch can be a lot of fun. You can even get your friends and family involved by hosting a detective-themed party. Whether you immerse your guests in a drama or simply ask them to show loyalty to a favourite character, a detective party can be enjoyable any time of the year.

Night of 100 Columbos

Columbo is one of the most well-known television detectives around, with his own distinctive style and attitude. A "night of 100 Columbos" means a house full of guests in trench coats, using bad accents and solving crimes. Have a "best impersonation" contest as well as plenty of Columbo decorations that you can make yourself. End the evening with a Columbo television series marathon with prizes to guests who can guess the murderer before the end of the show.

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes is a classic detective character that has got new life with the release of the new Sherlock Holmes movie featuring Robert Downey Jr. A Sherlock Holmes theme party can include guests in period costumes, including the trademark hat and pipe. Focus your party around one specific case like "The Red Headed League" or "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot," or reflect the latest Sherlock Holmes movie blockbuster. Provide traditional British foods and drinks.

Favourite Detective Characters

There are hundreds of classic and currently popular detective characters from television and movies, and inviting your friends to come as a favourite detective means plenty of variety and laughs for all who attend. From classics like Sherlock Holmes and Charlie Chan to current favourites like "Monk" or the cast from "CSI Miami," you can incorporate a "best costume" or "best portrayal of a detective" contest to keep everyone involved.

You can also focus only on detectives from novels to further challenge your guests who may end up at your door looking and acting like "Alex Cross," "Kay Scarpetta" or even "Nancy Drew" or "The Hardy Boys." Pass out paperback detective novels as party favours or as prizes for games to complete the theme.

Murder Mystery Party

Murder mystery parties are very popular as they involve all the invited guests in a mystery they need to solve together. Whether you hire a group to organise and perform the mystery or use a box kit to plan the event, a murder mystery party allows detective movie fans to immerse themselves in a fantasy and solve a crime while eating party food.

Hidden Object Party

Hidden object video games are very popular and keep players looking for specific objects hidden in scenes and environments. Many times these hidden items need to be put together to solve a bigger puzzle, which adds to the adventure. Create a living "hidden object" party theme to bring out the detective in all your guests.

Provide each guest with a list of items they have to find and break off into groups. Hide items throughout your home and build the game by providing a clue with each completed group of found objects. Winning teams can win a hidden object video or computer game to take home.
