End of School Activities

  1. Once students begin to feel that the end of the school year is in sight, they can always use some extra motivation. By acknowledging the fact that the last day of school is on the horizon and using that fact as part of various curricular activities, teachers can capitalize on kids' excitement.
  2. Math activity

  3. Ask kids to make paper chains with one link representing each school day; then ask them to make chains with one link for each day, including weekends, until school is over. Give them the following tasks: using the chain of their choice, calculate how many more hours, minutes, and seconds left until school is out for the summer.
  4. Social studies activity

  5. Provide kids with world maps and tell them they are going to plan a (virtual) vacation they will be taking during summer vacation. They will need to pick 10 cities in the world from 10 different countries that they will visit, label these, make a key showing which continents each city is in, and then draw what they think would be the most direct route.
  6. Literature activity

  7. List on the board, or on sheets of poster board, all the books and stories your class has read as a group during the year. Ask students to create awards to be presented to the best book or story, the most exciting, the most touching, the most interesting, and any other awards you think appropriate. Announce the results.
  8. Science Activity

  9. Set aside a day, or a portion of a day for a week, for the presentation of end-of-the-year science "tricks." Using the site listed below under Resources, or other sources, assign each student a science trick to prepare for the class. Provide students with any materials they might not have on hand at home. If possible, videotape the presentations to view on the very last day of school.
  10. Writing Activity

  11. Provide kids with either access to a computer or some interesting-looking writing paper and ask them to compose "warnings" which you will post in your room at the beginning of the next school year. Ask them to write the following: "Warning: 10 Things You Better Know about Mrs. Smith's Classroom." For those who want the opportunity to do so, allow time for sharing lists with each other.
