If someone you love has a 40th birthday coming up, figuring out what card to get them is often a challenge. But whether you want to give someone a humorous card, a sentimental card or something that falls in between, making the card yourself ensures that you will be able to express just how you feel without relying on pre-made cards and words that are not original. Making a card yourself saves money, too.
Other People Are Reading
Over the Hill
Over-the-hill birthday cards are a humorous way to approach your loved one’s 40th birthday party. Make a card shaped like a little hill, and draw someone just over the top coming down the other side. The front can read “Happy Birthday Janice, Over the Hill but Still Kicking!” On the inside, you can write a message along the lines of “It’s all downhill from here” and a personal note about your relationship with the person.
A year-based card is a flashback to the year the person was born. If the person was born in 1970, for example, you can put the year 1970 on the front of the card in psychedelic letters and make a collage of pictures from monumental moments that year. On the inside of the card, put a baby picture of your loved one with the text, “Those events weren’t as monumental as this one. Happy Birthday!”
Better with Age
People, like wine, only get better with age. To express this to your loved one, decorate the front of a card like a bottle of wine, or cut out a card in the shape of a bottle of wine. Make the year of the wine the year the person was born. On the inside of the card, put the quote, “This wine is 40 years old. It certainly doesn't show its age. -- Unknown.” If you really want to get clever you could even decorate the outside of a real wine bottle, or give them the card along with an aged wine.
As Old as You Feel
According to George William Curtis, “Age is a matter of feeling, not years.” Make a card covered in pictures of you and your loved one doing wacky, goofy and silly things together, with this quote on the front of the card. On the inside of the card, write “So I guess we’ll be teenagers forever.” You can add a loving note or your favourite story, and express how much you are looking forward to continuing the shenanigans well into old age.
