Memory foam mattresses are made of high-density polyurethane covered by a viscoelastic foam. This construction allows the mattress to conform to a person's body shape and isolate motion on the bed. Sleep Like the Dead conducted a study on memory foam mattress based on numerous criteria, culminating in a comfort rating. The rating is calculated by dividing the number of people who found the mattress comfortable by the size of the sample. The top-rated brands are listed below.
Spa Sensations memory foam mattresses tied for the highest comfort rating of 82 per cent in Sleep Like the Dead's survey. Those who did not find the bed comfortable thought it was too firm, but no other negatives -- like people getting too hot while they slept -- were reported. Spa Sensations mattresses are typically sold through Walmart for £103 to £337, depending on mattress size.
Night Therapy memory foam mattresses also tied for the top spot with an 82 per cent comfort rating. Respondents found the mattress to be on the firm side, but liked it for its relatively low price. It was found to be fairly good in terms of durability. These mattresses are normally sold in the U.S. through Sam's Club for about £260 for a queen-sized mattress. They can also be purchased online at mattress-solutions.co.uk.
The third and last mattress brand to get a comfort rating of 82 per cent is Bragada. The company's foam mattresses are made of pure cotton, silk and cashmere, which is then covered by the viscoelastic memory foam. Study respondents said it had medium firmness and excellent motion isolation. This product costs between £338 and £1,105, and can be ordered online at bragada.com.
Novaform received a comfort rating of 81 per cent because it tended to have less durability and more off-smells than the other brands, Sleep Like the Dead reports. Respondents said their Novaforms had medium to high firmness, and those who didn't like the product typically said it was too firm. Premature sagging was another drawback respondents reported. Available at Costco, this mattress costs between £325 and £650, depending on mattress size.
The Bergad/Isoform memory foam mattress was given an 80 per cent comfort rating. Respondents said this mattress only had fair durability and medium firmness, but had excellent motion isolation and good value. Respondents further reported the mattress as having an initial odour, but it was fairly good at keeping people from overheating. These mattresses run from £325 to £715 and can be ordered online at isoform.com.
Tempur-Pedic is the leading brand for memory foam mattresses, though it only received an 80 per cent comfort rating. Compared to less-expensive memory foam mattress brands in general, it did perform somewhat better in terms of durability and pain relief. However, respondents did not find it to be significantly superior to less-expensive brands. Twins-size mattresses of the original memory foam start at £454, and double-size mattress go up to £649. Other styles can cost up to £3,900. Tempur-Pedic mattresses can be ordered online at tempurpedic.com.
