Beginner BMX riders need a versatile bike that allows them to dabble in the various types of riding that BMX has to offer. Novice riders should keep in mind that purchasing a large-framed expert series BMX will make learning more difficult. New riders should purchase a beginner model BMX, which has a smaller body that helps in the learning process. Many top BMX manufacturers offer bikes specifically catered towards beginners.

The junior series features a top tube that is just over 18 inches. The pedals on the junior series from Haro Bikes are a miniature version of the conventional pedals to allow the smaller feet of the beginner rider to comfortably push the bike forward. The junior series BMX from Haro Bikes features a braking mechanism, which is located under the right handlebar grip.


Mongoose bikes continues to produce the best BMX and mountain biking models. According to BMX Bike Reviews, "The company now produces several models of BMX, mountain bikes and street bicycles, making ample use of lightweight alloys and magnesium." Mongoose also offers a series of BMX bikes for juveniles and beginner riders. The Pit Crew model from Mongoose features the same construction as the advanced models yet features a 16-inch top tube for smaller riders. The Pit Crew model even features a set of pegs for novice riders who have mastered the basics and wish to move on to tricks. Young riders can utilize the pegs of Pit Crew model from Mongoose to execute grinds on ramps as well as perform flatland BMX tricks.
