Purple is a bold and regal colour, which makes it ideal for Christmas decorating. Purple is versatile because you can choose to mix royal purple, lavender, pink and all the shades in between. With gold, purple is majestic while it is more subdued with silver and grey. Decide which colours to use with your purple ensemble and then decorate to your heart's delight. From country cosy to royal and refined, purple gives you plenty of variety when it comes to decorating for Christmas.

Your tree gives you plenty of room to exhibit your favourite colours. For a pleasing tree, look for ornaments in different shapes and shades of purple. Stay within your theme for the best look. If you're going for a country look, use natural elements, such as artificial purple sprigs and berries and simple ornaments. Use a lilac or lavender striped fabric for your tree skirt. For a more elegant look, hang crystal-shaped ornaments and purple bead garland from the branches. Use silk or organza for your tree skirt.

Table decorations

Bring the mood into your dining room by setting a colourful table and displaying a bright centrepiece. Choose assorted shades of purple for your table, such as lavender glassware, pink wineglasses, and purple chargers. For a more elegant look, use gold chargers under purple plates. Hang a centrepiece by pinning lengths of ribbon to the ceiling with purple ornaments suspended over the table. You could also place a wreath in the centre of your table and decorate it with purple and gold glass balls. Tie bows of shimmery purple fabric and place them on the wreath. For extra colour, put a group of purple or gold column candles in the centre of the wreath.

Wreaths give you an opportunity to spread Christmas cheer throughout the house and even into the neighbourhood from your front door. An evergreen wreath with purple and silver or gold balls is a traditional look. You can also hang a wreath made from purple, black and silver balls for a more modern take on the wreath. A collection of lavender lilies on a grapevine wreath creates a more country feel. Try dried oregano with other ornamental herbs for another option. Tie a ribbon torn from home spun fabric and put it on the wreath for a finished look.

Garland brings colour to different spaces in your home, such as staircases and doorways. To add purple to an evergreen garland, try simple purple ornaments. For a different twist, twist purple plastic sheeting around white plastic foam balls and tie off the top with a matching pipe cleaner. Fluff the excess paper at the top and display these ornaments throughout your garland.
