Zumba instructors combine a variety of dance styles in their fitness classes, including reggae, salsa, calypso and meringue, as well as traditional exercise moves such as knee lifts and squats. The majority of Zumba instructors work in health clubs, recreation centres or fitness centres. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) classifies Zumba instructors under the category of fitness trainers and aerobics instructors. Salaries for instructors vary by class size, employer and experience, among other factors.

Employment Estimate and Mean Wage

The BLS reported that fitness trainers and aerobics instructors, including Zumba instructors, held an estimated 225,490 jobs in May of 2010. Fitness trainers and aerobics instructors earned a mean hourly wage of £11.20 and a mean annual wage of £23,348 in 2010.

Hourly Wage

According to May 2010 BLS reports, fitness trainers and aerobics instructors earned a median hourly wage of £9.70. The lowest paid 10 per cent of instructors earned an hourly wage of £5.3 or less, while instructors in the bottom 25th percentile earned an hourly wage of £6.2 or less. The highest paid 25 per cent of fitness trainers and aerobics instructors earned an hourly wage of £14.40 or more, while the highest paid 10 per cent earned an hourly wage of £19.8 or more.

The highest paid 25 per cent earned £29,984 or more, while the highest paid 10 per cent earned an annual wage of £41,210 or more.

The earnings for Zumba instructors, and fitness trainers and aerobics instructors in general, vary by state. According to BLS reports, the state of New York is the top-paying state for this occupation, with an hourly mean wage of £16 and an estimated annual wage of £33,800 as of 2010. Washington D.C. is also reported to be one of the top-paying areas for this occupation, with an hourly mean wage of £15.2 and annual mean wage of £31,726. The amusement and recreation industries have the highest levels of employment for this occupation. Fitness trainers and aerobics instructors in amusement and recreation industries earn an hourly mean wage of £11.60 and annual mean wage of £24,212.
