Fancy dress parties give guests the opportunity to break free from the conventions of everyday dress and take a walk on the wild side. While some fancy dress options prove popular time and time again, on occasion, breaking free from these traditional get-ups proves an effective way to set yourself apart from the crowd. When next the occasion for fancy dress presents itself, adopt a decidedly less common costume.

Pop Culture Icon

The proliferation of media makes pop culture icons household faces. Select something modern and in-the-now by creating a costume modelled after a pop culture staple. Keep your eye on the news in the weeks leading up to your dress-up event to find someone ideal for embodiment. For example, you could don a pair of cut-off shorts and a tie-dyed T-shirt and become the fun-loving survivor, Rupert from the popular reality TV series. Or you could create a silver Mylar balloon get up and set inside, instantly setting yourself up as Falcon Heney, the infamous "balloon boy."

Office Supply

Keep your costume simple, yet make a statement, by dressing up as a common office supply. Create a yellow fabric tube with and attach it to a top hat that you have painted pink to become a pencil. Or, if your office nemesis is the hard-to-control fax machine, become this object, using a box to create a fax machine body and adding cardboard and other additions to make yourself look just like this piece of office equipment.

Urban Item

If you call a big city home, reflect your love of this locale by dressing up as an urban item. Use cardboard to recreate one of the most dominant buildings in your city, making yourself the Empire State Building or a similarly impressive structure. If you delight in taking in the artistic graffiti that fills your city streets, create a brick wall out of cardboard or styrofoam brick and use spray paint to add words to your body, becoming the embodiment of this structure.

Food Costume

Attend your affair dressed as a simple piece of food by crafting a food costume. Use cardboard to create the outline of an amorphous egg with a bright yellow yolk. Cut the centre of the yolk and slip your face inside, using string to attach this piece to you. Paint your face yellow to finish the look. If you have an inflatable lifesaver left over the summer, attach tape or paint it to resemble a doughnut and go as this sugary delight.
