Floor tile styles and materials range from the glasslike density of high temperature-manufactured porcelain to the soft tones and textured surface of tumbled stone floor tile. The do-it-yourselfer contemplating a tile floor project has a lot of size options to choose from: Floor tile varies in size from tiny 2-inch squares to massive, monolithic 2-foot squares.

2-inch Tile

Two-inch tile comes in 2-inch squares or hexagonal shapes. Mounted on 12-inch sheets, 2-inch tiles, have a heavy glaze and porcelain body. This tile is used primarily on shower floors and occasionally as a main bathroom floor material (especially decorative hexagonal 2-inch tile).

4-inch Tile

Like 2-inch tile, 4-inch tile is common in bathrooms, notably shower floors. Tumbled natural stone tile is the most common 4-inch floor tile and is favoured for shower floors due to its non-slip properties.

6- and 8-inch Tile

Tiles that are 8 inches square are appropriate for smaller bathroom flooring applications. Six-inch tile is appropriate for industrial kitchens.

12-inch Tile

Twelve-inch tile is the most common tile used for tile flooring -- there are literally thousands of varieties of colours and textures of ceramic, porcelain and natural stone 12-inch tile. Twelve-inch tile is accommodates kitchen floor areas, bathrooms and exterior surfaces. Additionally, commercial buildings commonly feature 12-inch tile flooring.

16-inch Tile

Although is a less common size, 16-inch tile is used for flooring in bathrooms, kitchens and main flooring areas of homes. Commercial buildings such as offices exhibit 16-inch tile.

18-inch Tile

For fewer grout lines (a bonus for maintenance), use 18-inch tile because of the large square footage area of each piece (2.25 square feet). Both homes and commercial buildings 18-inch floor tile is used in feature.

24-inch Tile

Monolithic 24r-inch tile is found in custom homes and commercial buildings, such as airports. The do-it-yourselfer does not have the equipment or expertise to install 24-inch floor tile.

Rectangular Tile

Floor tile is also available in a variety of rectangular sizes. These include 6- by 12-inch tile used or a variety of surfaces, 3- by 6-inch tile for bathroom flooring and large 12- by 18-inch flooring tile. Additionally, natural stone tile flooring components of patterns -- such as the Versailles pattern -- come in a variety of rectangular pieces.
