Rubber heel tips protect the heel from wearing down and it adds a gripping factor to help prevent slipping. Rubber heel tips are easily replaced, making repairing shoes easier. The malleable nature of rubber also tends to add a bit of comfort as it absorbs the shock when you step.

Rubber Heel Cover on Combination Heels

For full flat heels on most dress shoes, a rubber heel tip can cover the entire heel section of the shoe. The rubber can be scored a number of different ways. It can be smooth, coarse, striped or ridged. A ridged heel works better for good traction on outdoor surfaces and collects less dirt. A coarse or striped heel is favoured for shoes intended for indoor use. These hold well on tiled surfaces and other slick floors.

Full Rubber Heel

A full rubber heel can be added to a shoe. These heels are sometimes part of a solid rubber sole, like on work boots. Other rubber heels can be attached to the bottom of a regular sole. The difference between this type of heel and a heel cover is that the entire thickness of the heel is made of rubber. This serves for a long-lasting heel that makes the shoe last longer. One drawback comes from the fact the back of your heel wears away more quickly due to extended pressure and scraping against surfaces. While the sole should wear away evenly, you will often have a worn portion toward the back of the heel that slopes according to how you walk.

Half Rubber Heel

A half rubber heel usually covers the back portion of a flat heel. The intention is to prevent slipping and offer protection to the most worn part of the heel. The benefit to covering only the back half is that the heel tends to wear more evenly. The rubber portion wears down more slowly than other substances. Because the back of the heel takes the brunt of your weight and impact, the rubber will make it last longer without causing a groove or rounded area.

Heel Tip for High Heels

A rubber heel tip on high heel shoes is important for absorbing impact. It gives a bit of cushion to an already precarious weight balance. It helps to prevent the heel from slipping out under pressure or awkward pressure, such as the back push when you climb stairs. The rubber heel tip also cuts down the noise pointed heels make on hard surfaces.
