A netbook is a laptop computer with a 7-inch to 10-inch screen for accessing the Internet, e-mail and completing basic tasks like word processing or listening to music. These computers come with a built-in microphone, along with a jack for connecting an external microphone. Netbooks come with an array of pre-loaded software, as well as device drivers for its built-in microphone, microphone jack and other hardware.

Locating the Microphone
The microphone on a netbook is on the front of the computer below the touchpad or on the upper portion of your netbook's case, above the keyboard. It contains one or more vertical or horizontal slits. The microphone is always active and a single device driver controls its operation. You cannot remove your netbook's microphone or modify it to work with another device.
In addition to a built-in microphone, your netbook contains a single microphone jack on the left or right side of the case. This jack accepts a standard 3.5 millimetre (mm) microphone connection cable. If using a non-standard microphone, you'll need to purchase a converter to complete the connection. Microphone converters are available at computer and electronics stores, as well as online outlets.
To use your netbook's microphone, open an application such as Sound Recorder, click "Start Recording" -- or something similar -- and speak normally into the microphone. Note that the microphone will pick up background noise, unless your netbook contains technology to filter out noises.
Purchasing an External Microphone
External microphones, with or without headphones for listening to recorded audio, are available at computer and electronics stores, retail superstores and certain home improvement stores. Microphones are also available from online computer and electronics outlets, as well as online auction websites. When purchasing an external microphone, take note of whether the device requires batteries or an external power supply and purchase or order these additional components as well.
