A central Christian teaching is that active dependence on God, or faith, is a source of steady moral strength through life's shifting circumstances. Teaching children the value of faith early on will help them develop habits of confidence in God at a young age. You can use crafts to teach and remind children about God's ability to protect and provide for them.

Paper Mache Shield of Faith

Ephesians 6 teaches about the armour of God, an extended metaphor for the protective power of various godly virtues and provisions, including the "shield of faith." Older children can cut a shield shape out of cardboard, cover it with a few layers of paper mache, and paint it with tempera paint. Attach tight rolls of newspaper to the cardboard with masking tape before applying paper-mache to make 3-D shield decorations like a cross or a letter "F" for "Faith."

Faith Heroes

The Bible tells the stories of many people who demonstrated great faith in God, including Noah building the ark, Daniel risking execution in the lions' den, David's duel with Goliath and many others. Let each child pick a Bible story of faith that is particularly meaningful to her and illustrate a page with a picture or symbol of the story, like a lion for Daniel or a sling and five stones for David. Hang the pictures on the wall to create a Wall of Faith.

Faith in God's Provision

A concrete application of faith is dependence on God to give us what we need in life and thankfulness for what he already has provided. Bring printouts or pictures cut from magazines that show things children may be thankful for or depend on God for, such as food, a house, a family and friends. Let each child pick or cut out several images of things God has given him and paste them to a sheet of paper as a reminder of God's provision.

Faith in God's Forgiveness

People who depend on God's loving forgiveness find it to be a steady source of inner strength. This craft helps children visualise God's willingness to wipe away our sins. Place a small amount of coloured gelatin in zip-close bags and glue or tape them shut securely. Give one bag to each child and let her draw pictures, words or scribbles in the gelatin with her fingers. Explain how God can wipe away our bad desires and actions, and let the children smear the bags to wipe away their patterns.
