Adobe Illustrator CS1 through CS5 provide professional, vector graphic drawing tools for the personal computer. The application creates two-dimensional artwork for consumer products, magazines and advertising. Designers edit and augment the artwork with five glow shape effects: "Inner Glow," "Outer Glow," "Neon Glow," "Diffuse Glow" and "Glowing Edges."

Inner Glow

"Inner Glow" gives a shape a shaded, rounded colour gradient within the borders of the shape. The effect is found in the "Stylize" flyout menu of the "Illustrator Effects" on the "Effects" menu. Adjust the way the glow interacts with the shape colour with the "Mode," "Opacity," "Blur," "Center" and "Edge" settings in the effect.

Outer Glow

"Outer Glow" creates a shaded colour gradient outside the borders of the shape. The effect also is found in the "Stylize" flyout menu of the "Illustrator Effects" on the "Effects" menu. The "Mode," "Opacity" and "Blur" settings change the way the "Outer Glow" effect appears on the drawing surface.

Neon Glow

"Neon Glow" is an imported Photoshop effect in Illustrator that creates an ambient glow around a shape. The shape is filled with a black background to highlight the neon-like glow of the shape edges. The effect is found in the "Artistic" flyout menu of the "Photoshop Effects" on the "Effects" menu. Adjust the "Neon Glow" using the "Glow Size," "Glow Brightness" and "Glow Color" settings in the effect.

Diffuse Glow

"Diffuse Glow" also is an imported Photoshop effect in Illustrator that creates a speckled or grainy edge to a shape. The effect is found in the "Distort" flyout menu of the "Photoshop Effects" on the "Effects" menu. The "Graininess, "Glow Amount" and "Clear Amount" settings will change the appearance of the "Diffuse Glow" effect.

Glowing Edges

The "Glowing Edges" effect is the final Photoshop effect imported into Illustrator. The effect adds a black background to a shape and highlights the shape edges with the inverse colour of the border. "Glowing Edges" is located in the "Stylize" flyout menu of the "Photoshop Effects" in the "Effects" menu. Change the appearance of the "Glowing Edges" effect with the "Edge Width," "Edge Brightness" and "Edge Smoothness" settings.
