The AIM messenger application connects friends and family across platforms and devices, and is available in a mobile application version for use on cellphones. Using AIM, you can chat with any of your online buddies and send messages to your buddies who are currently offline. Periodically, questions may arise when a buddy who is in fact online shows up as offline. This may be happening for a number of reasons. Luckily, there is an easy way to fix the problem.

Refresh Your Page

One of the most overlooked troubleshooting measures is refreshing your AIM page. If your Internet connection failed even briefly, all of your buddies will show up as grey offline icons. You will likewise show up as offline to your buddies on their systems. Clicking the "Refresh" button should ensure that you are connected to the Internet and reestablish the connection so you can once again see who is online and offline.

If you're using an AIM application, close and restart it.

"Offline" Status Manually Set

A user can manually select and set her privacy setting to offline, or invisible. So if you deliberately or in error have set your status to "offline," you will appear offline and unavailable to chat to all of your buddies. If this is the case, you can manually override this by right-clicking your name above the buddy list and selecting your status as "online."

Privacy Settings

If all of a user's buddies appear offline, the problem may be with the user's own privacy settings. The following set of commands may clear it up. In the chat window, go to "Preferences," then "Accounts" and select your AIM account. Click "Security." Confirm that the specific buddy or group of buddies in question is not purposely blocked. Set your privacy level to "Allow anyone."

Re-download AIM

If none of the above seems to fix the problem and the online buddy or group of buddies is still listed as "offline," you may want to uninstall and reinstall your AIM application. Alternately, you may want to first try updating AIM, in case the problem you are having is caused by a bug that has been fixed with a recent update. All updates can be downloaded from the AIM website.
