Whether you are preparing for another Halloween or a school play, it is a good idea to plan out your costumes and face paint ideas ahead of time if you intend to make them yourself. Homemade costumes with face paint is an economical alternative to store-bought products, and allows you to explore new creative ideas that you can be proud for constructing on your own.

Fortune Teller Ghost

A no-sew fortune teller costume can be easy to assemble with clothing items you may already have in your closet. Give your fortune teller costume something extra by adding ghostly face paint. Start with a skirt and staple or pin a variety of mismatched dishcloths to the waistband, so that the dishcloths hang down around the skirt. Hide the waistband of the skirt with a wide belt, or if you do not have a belt you can tie a bandanna or other piece of fabric around your waist. Wear a blouse and embellish with long necklaces. Wrap a scarf around your head and tie it on the side or in the back. Paint your face white with black circles around your eyes and white lipstick on your lips.

Spa Princess

A spa princess is an easy-to-assemble character that calls for a bathrobe, slippers, head towel, a mirror to carry around as a prop and green face paint to make it look like the individual is wearing a cucumber or avocado spa mask. To embellish the spa look, glue on long fake fingernails and if you have open-toe slippers, stick pedicure separators between your toes.

To create a homemade hobo costume, go through your closet in search of a pair of trousers and a top that you don't mind distressing and dirtying. Cut the pant legs to different lengths and dirty them by running them through the mud or colouring charcoal over them in various parts. Do the same with the shirt, or layers of shirts. Find a large stick outside and attach a bandanna to one end of it, which your hobo character will carry around. For the face, paint smudge marks with black paint to give an overall dirty appearance.

Bunches of Grapes

A creative do-it-yourself costume idea is to dress up as a bunch of grapes. Blow up green and purple balloons and tie string around them at the closure. Connect the string to your clothes using safety pins so that you are covered in clusters of the balloons that resemble bunches of grapes. Tie the string around your wrists and ankles, too. Dress in earth tones, such as brown or green, so that you look like the vine that the grapes are connected to. Finish by painting your face green or purple to match the balloons you are wearing. If you go in a group, some people can dress as green bunches of grapes while others can dress as purple ones.
