To understand the personal qualities that a human resources (HR) manager needs for job success, consider what she does in her multiple managerial roles. She is an important consultant to all of the managers in the organisation, including top managers. She advises on everything related to human resources, including hiring, termination, compensation, benefits, job classification and employee relations.

Perhaps the most important personal quality for an HR manager is judgment. An effective HR manager cannot be the consultant to managers across an organisation if he cannot use judgment. He has to look at every situation and help a manager find a solution that will involve fair and equitable treatment of employees. This includes knowing which policies and procedures are relevant to any situation involving employees.

Critical Thinking

An HR manager must think critically about issues involved in manager-employee conflicts. A manager will see a problem with an employee from one perspective, and an employee will see it from another perspective. An HR manager must think like a manager, deciding how best to ensure that the organisation responds to the employee's perspective while also recommending how a manager will comply with employment law and the organisation's HR policies and procedures.

Problem Solving

An HR manager must identify programs, strategies, tools and other solutions that will enhance the ways management develops employees as human resources. For example, she must solve a problem such as how to integrate two companies with diverse workforces after a merger. She must create a diversity program that will help the two workforces become one workforce.

Leadership and Communication

Leadership and communication go hand in hand for HR managers. The HR manager position exists because the organisation needs someone to oversee how people are managed, such as standardising the hiring process. But this represents the technical side of personnel management. An HR manager communicates with all staffers so that they can understand HR programs. He must also get HR workers to follow his lead and produce results that will benefit the human dimension of the organisation.
