Crafters can delight in turning purse blanks into one-of-a-kind creations. Blank purses are available in sizes from clutch bags to large totes. The bags will accept most forms of decoration and are available in different fabric blends. Check the manufacturer's instructions; the blanks may need to be washed before applying decorations.

Painting and Dying

Options abound for painting and dying purse blanks. Paint a variety of designs with fabric paint. First draw the design and fill in with appropriate colours. Or, apply splashes of colour randomly on the bag. Dye the background of the purse a desired colour and then add painted flowers or different designs. Another alternative is tie-dying the purse in a multitude of colours.

Add beads to plain purses of all sizes. Select beads to fit the style and use of bag. If you are crafting an evening clutch bag, choose metallic and transparent glass beads. Sew or glue the beads on to the purse. Or, personalise the bag with names and dates of special occasions.

Fabrics and Embroidery

Decorate your bag with fabric patches and embroidery. Select either iron-on patches or sew fabric directly on the bag. Go through your fabric remnants, cut them in different shapes and sizes and sew them randomly or in a specific design. Craft a bag by either gluing or stitching small bows in different colours and sizes, either directly on the bag or on top of different fabric swatches.

For those who enjoy embroidery, select different colours of thread and create a design by hand or with a special sewing-machine attachment.

Buttons, Chains and Flowers

Sew on leftover buttons from other sewing and craft projects. Draw a design on the purse blank and fill in with the buttons, or sew the buttons all over the bag to create a colourful design. Sewing on different lengths of chains in gold and silver can perk up a plain clutch bag. Make a flower garden on the bag with chenille stems and silk flowers.

Create themes for your bags. Take a plain tote bag and turn it into a golf tote, using green yarn for grass and glue-on tees. Craft a knitting bag by gluing on yarn in different shapes. A workout bag could sport painted bicycles, joggers and weights. Paint or use a marking pen to write authors' names for a book bag. Decorate a bag for a newborn baby by painting or drawing the baby's name, birth date and birth weight.
