Dandelion greens provide a nutritious, low-calorie vegetable for a main meal or an addition to a summer salad. Parts of the dandelion provide alternative medicinal remedies for a myriad of ailments and aches. Gardeners do not need a lush lawn or garden plot to grow this prolific perennial plant. Potted dandelions are easy to maintain, since they grow naturally on hillsides, the edge of woods and throughout lawns.

Light Requirements

Dandelions in nature thrive best in full-sun areas, advises the University of California. However, the hearty perennial plants can grow in virtually any moist environment. The use of grow lights helps indoor dandelions establish strong taproots and healthy leaves. Plant lights provide better lighting than window lighting or traditional white lighting used in homes. The plant lights mimic full-sun conditions, enabling dandelions to grow indoors successfully.

Plant grow lights simulate natural sun inside. These lights produce red and blue light spectra not found in traditional white household lighting. The light is not filtered through the grow lights, as it is through the home's window panes.

Grow lights help with seed germination. A small amount of heat generates from the lights and increases the indoor container soil temperature. Seedling growth increases with increased temperatures and full-sun lighting conditions. The use of grow lights encourages faster, healthier and stronger container dandelions for gardeners to use for alternative medicinal purposes or healthy eating.

Time Frame

Set a grow light several inches from the soil of newly planted indoor dandelions. Keep the grow light on the containers during the entire germination and seedling stages. As the dandelions increase in size, lift the lights at a further distance from the plants and soil to prevent overheating and burning the foliage. Do not discontinue the use of grow lights once container dandelions reach full-size. They require full-sun lighting for optimal growth.

Indoor dandelion growing is possible year-round with warm home temperatures and the use of plant grow lights. Plants do well in a temperature range of 10C to 25 degrees Celsius, advises the University of California. Plants often remain in the seedling stage for two to four months. Higher temperatures speed germination and seedling stages for faster plant growth. Add indoor lighting to the 77-degree temperatures and container dandelions grow rapidly.

Mature dandelion flowers look like small cotton balls. These are not flowers; each ball of fluff consists of thousands of seeds. Consider the location of indoor pots and grow lights when growing dandelions. If allowed to get to the seeding stage, these can spread quickly throughout the home. Dandelion seeding stage may cause sensitivity to family members with allergies.

Always supervise children near plant grow lights and electrical cords. Handle grow lights with caution to prevent accidental skin burns. Check equipment weekly to prevent fires.
